Every year 80 million fluorescent lights are sent to landfill sites in the UK – despite the fact that each lamp contains enough mercury to pollute 30,000 litres of water beyond a safe level for drinking. Companies now have to think again about how they dispose of these items. A fluorescent tube contains a small amount of the highly toxic and environmentally harmful Mercury. As a result they are now classified as hazardous waste and must be segregated for specialist disposal.

Safelec Environmental Services are working to recycle all Fuel and Oil wastes up to 100% ensuring they are treated correctly and refined for reuse. Our trained staff has firsthand experience in the cleanup of such wastes, including removal of oily rags and small fuel spills.

The current national controls on waste originate from the Control of Pollution Act 1974 and were greatly tightened with the introduction of the Environmental Protection Act 1990. Legislation originally focused on the disposal of waste, but since the introduction of the EC Framework Directive on waste (Directive 75/442/EEC, amended as Directive 2006/12/EC and Directive 2008/98/EC) control has extended to include the storage, treatment, recycling and transport of waste.

The ‘Duty of Care’ was introduced under the Environmental Protection Act 1990. Anyone who imports, produces, carries, keeps, treats or disposes of waste is subject to a duty of care whereby they must take all reasonable and applicable measures:

-To ensure that waste is stored and transported appropriately and securely so it does not escape
-To check that waste transferred to people or businesses that are authorised to do so
-To complete waste transfer notes (WTNs) to document transfers.

The Duty of Care is designed to be an essentially self-regulating system, based on good business practice. Its purpose is to prevent the practice of waste producers simply handing their waste over to anyone prepared to take it away, without giving consideration to where it is going and whether it will be dealt with properly. It also ensures there is a clear audit trail from when the waste is produced until it is disposed of.

With landfill sites no longer accepting oil and fuel contaminated wastes, including oily rags and soak up pads, it can be a costly process to remove such wastes. Safelec Environmental Services can provide a professional, cost effective solution to any Fuel and Oil waste streams you have. We have specialized spill kits, as well as secure transportation apparatus for safe removal from site.

Safelec Environmental Services are experienced in the recovery of contaminated plastic waste streams, we collect from site, leaving you with an approved Environment agency consignment note, and a cost effective service for complete piece of mind.

We source contaminated plastics that have been difficult to recover, recycle and re-use. It is now possible to separate these and prevent them from landfill. The key benefits are such that the once-redundant plastics can now be recovered and then reused further in the plastics processing markets.

Safelec can accept plastics contaminated with other plastics or metals but can also segregate on site or provide containment for storage solutions
